Idea

The customer managed to save about $300 during the holidays by comparing Uber and Lyft prices. This is how the idea of upgrading an already existing app SafeRide/WalkSafe was born.

Project

The aim of the app SafeRide/WalkSafe is to keep users safe during their trip from one destination to another. After entering the destination address the app counts the estimated time of arrival based on the current position and how a user is going to get there (via Uber, Lyft, taxi, driving or walking). If a user doesn’t notify the app about their safe arrival, people from the list of contacts get the warning messages about the geolocation of the user and can call the police.

Solution

To start with the customer wanted us to prove professional qualification and check the hypothesis about the new feature, that’s why we started with developing a new feature for the already existed app. In the old software a user could have chosen between taxi and walking. We added the opportunity to call for an Uber or Lyft car within the app.

After the first release we started developing iOS and Android apps from scratch. It resulted in the interface redesign and improvement of user experience (now the work with the app starts with filling in contact details and choosing the destination).Our team has also changed the trip creation to make it more convenient. The comparison of Uber and Lyft prices have been added.

Challenges

To cut customer’s costs we decided to work with the old backend, which meant the necessity to work with a third-party code and adapt to its constraints. The old backend was made on the basis of an old technology PARSE, which is not supported anymore, also a lot of libraries used were out-of-date. Some features had to be done in client’s side, because they didn’t exist in the backend. However, this solution helper to safe about 2 months of development resources (which meant around $10-15K for the customer).

Design

In the process of work under the project the concept of the app has been changed. Cost efficient rides come first instead of just “safe rides”, that’s why the name and logo of the app have been changed.

2 native designs were created for iOS and Android.

We also created some animated commercials to promote the app. In the future we are going to make a new backend and add some new features, e.g. add the comparison of prices for more services, dark mode and more notifications (for example the notification to finish the ride if a user achieved the destination and didn’t do it themself).
